Temporary Driving License for International Tourists at BIA
(Department of Motor Traffic)
Tourists arriving in Sri Lanka can obtain their Temporary Driving License immediately upon landing, making it easier than ever to explore our island at their own pace.
Requirements
- Foreign driving license (only full driving licenses are considered for conversion; probationary, provisional, temporary, or learners' licenses are not accepted).
- If the driving license is not in English, a translation should be submitted.
- Valid passport and visa.
Importance
- Foreign license must be valid for a period of one year or more from the date of conversion.
- Maximum validity period of a temporary driving license is 5 months.
- Conversion is applied for motorcycle and light vehicle classes only.
- All restrictions and conditions in the foreign license are applied (e.g.,corrective lenses, automatic transmission, hearing aid user, etc.).
What should you possess?
- Driving license of your country of residence with a validity period of atleast one year. Note: If it is not in English, please provide an English translation certified by the relevant embassy.
- Passport, valid visa, or entry permit.
Benefits
- You can drive motorcycles and light vehicles for up to five months during your stay.
