January 28, 2026
As part of a Japan-funded project implemented by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), Sri Lanka today launched its first Automated Border Control (ABC) e-gate at Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), marking a significant milestone in strengthening border control capacity in response to infectious diseases in Southwest Asia.
The initiative is led by the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation, in partnership with the Government of Japan and the International Organization for Migration (IOM), and aims to enhance safe, efficient, and resilient border management through digital innovation.
The official handover ceremony was attended by H.E. Akio Isomata, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka; Hon. Anura Karunathilaka, Minister of Ports and Civil Aviation; Hon. K. M. Ananda Wijepala, Minister of Public Security and Parliamentary Affairs; Ms. Kristin Parco, Chief of Mission of IOM Sri Lanka and the Maldives; along with senior government officials and representatives from partner institutions.
With a total investment of USD 8.4 million, the project reflects Japan’s strong commitment to regional pandemic preparedness, health security, and the promotion of safe and orderly mobility. The introduction of the ABC e-gate is expected to improve passenger processing efficiency while strengthening emergency response mechanisms at points of entry.
The project also aligns with Sri Lanka’s national priorities on digital transformation, public health security, and compliance with the International Health Regulations (IHR), contributing to enhanced resilience and preparedness against future public health threats.
