Lesson 4: Our stakeholders

The General Public

We learnt earlier that our company is performing a public duty on behalf of the public.

Every member of the general public has a right to use our airports. A member of the public may use the airport as a passenger. He may come to the airport to drop or pick up another passenger. He may come to the airport to gather some information that he requires. A school principal may bring a group of school children to see the airport. Now all these are examples of instances where the members of the general public would come into contact with our company in some way.

On the other hand, as we learnt in Lesson 3, our company is owned by the government. When we make profits the government in turn would earn a lot of revenue which it can use for the well-being of the citizens. A part of those moneys will be spent on education, part of it will be spent on health services, part of it will be spent to construct roads and other infrastructure facilities that are useful for the public and part of it may also be used to pay loans obtained by the government not only for airport development but even for other purposes. In this manner the revenue earned by our company ultimately goes back to the public as it rightfully should, because the general public is the ultimate owner of our company. So the general public benefits from the well-being of our company even without coming into direct contact with it.

For some reason, if our company fails to perform well operationally, then the general public who make use of the airport will be affected. More importantly, if our company fails to perform well financially, then every single member of the public would be affected to some degree and this includes even the housewife in a remote village, the new born baby in its cradle, a plantation worker toiling in the hills, the fisherman who toils at sea and the farmer who toils in the field all of whom have no dealings what so ever with the airport.

In this manner, the general public becomes the most important stakeholder of our company.
