Prime Minister observes development work of Batticaloa International Airport

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe inspected the development work of the Batticaloa International Airport on Friday (4th) October 2019.
Speaking to the media at the venue, the Premier said the Batticaloa Airport is being developed as a measure to improve the economy in the district and generate new revenue streams.
The tourism industry is identified as a major contributor for economic development in the district and measures are being taken to attract more tourists to the Eastern province by developing the Batticaloa Airport, the Prime Minister explained.
Further, he explained that the airport has already been open for domestic civilian flights and will be open for international flights in the near future. Along with the commencement of direct flights from the Indian destinations to the Batticaloa International Airport, there will be increased growth of international tourists to the Eastern province and the hotel industry too will benefit from this.  A discussion was held with the owners of the tourist hotels and this event was attended by the senior officials of Airport and Aviation Services (Sri Lanka), Civil Aviation Authority and the government officials in the Batticaloa district.
