January 14, 2020

Under the direction of Hon. Prasanna Ranatunga, Minister of Tourism & Aviation and with the guidance of Major General G. A. Chandrasiri, Chairman of Airport Aviation Services (Sri Lanka) Limited (AASL), new development initiatives are being taken place at BIA to introduce immediate solutions to ease the passenger congestion and to uplift the service delivery.

New Traffic Plan

While a new traffic plan has been introduced to ease off traffic congestion in and around the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) the constructions are underway to widen the Katunayake-Minuwangoda road to ease off the vehicle traffic in and around the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). This will facilitate the airport users immensely to have easy access to the airport.

Program to Uplift the Taxi Service at BIA

In addition, the management has taken measures to address the current issues of the BIA taxi service providers and travel service providers. There are around 650 taxi service providers registered at BIA and they play a very vital role by providing taxi services to the tourists. The management recently had a meeting with all the taxi service associations and the travel service companies to identify their pressing issues and addressed those immediately. The objective of the program is to provide an improved service to the valuable passengers and all airport users.

Development Initiatives at MRIA and Colombo Airport Ratmalana

The management of AASL is in negotiations with prospective airlines to commence regional operations to the Maldivian Islands and the South-Indian sectors from the Colombo Airport Ratmalana. Further, the management is having discussions with airlines to re-commence the international flight operations to MRIA. The new southern expressway network will connect the airport to surrounded areas while reducing the travel time from MRIA to Colombo to 2 hours and 30 minutes. While the management of AASL is looking to make MRIA a truly wonderful travel destination, AASL is planning to offer attractive benefits to new airlines those who are planning to commence operations.
