The airport is being built at a cost of 209 Million US dollars. With the building of the new airport, it would be possible to further streamline air flights.

Airport, Katunayaka. This decision was taken at the progress meeting of the
ministry of Ports and Aviation held in Temple Trees under the guidance of HE
the President Mahinda Rajapakse on 25th May 2010. Honorable Deputy Ministers
Rohitha Abeygunawardena and Dayasritha Tissera and Honorable Parliamentarian
Namal Rajapaksa also attended this meeting.
