INTRODUCTION

 

 

Civil Engineering (Maintenance) Division is providing services to carry out repairs, improvements, and maintenance of Civil Engineering infrastructure facilities at Bandaranaike International Airport and other stations such as Ratmalana Airport, Talangama Receiving Station, Attidiya Transmitting Station, Piduruthalagala Radar & Base Complex, etc..

 

 

This division has a workforce of about 200 employees. This comprises Civil Engineers, Technical Officers, Supervisors, Skilled Workers (such as Carpenters, Masons, Painters, Operators, etc,) and Unskilled Workers. Repairs, improvements and maintenance of most of facilities are carried out using direct work force while specialized work and some works are carried out utilizing outside contractors following tender procedures.

 

 

 

SERVICE TO THE PUBLIC

 

 

Our division provides an efficient and effective service to Airport users by providing repairs, improvements and maintenance of Aerodrome infrastructure facilities such as Runway, Taxiways, Aprons (aircraft parking bays), etc and other Civil Engineering infrastructure facilities at BIA to International Civil Aviation Organization’s Standards and other International standards. The services provided by this division ensures continuous and smooth operation of the Airport.

 

 

 

   
FACILITIES & SERVICES PROVIDED BY CIVIL ENGINEERING (MAINTANANCE) DIVISION
 
   

 

 

 
  The following systems are coming under purview of Civil Engineering (Maintenance) division.  
       
  Air Side Infrastructure Facilities  
       
  1. Runway, Taxiway and Apron Pavements including condition monitoring of these pavements  
  2. Service Roads and Perimeter Road systems  
  3. Airside canals, Drains and Culverts  
  4. Airside Signs and Markings  
  5. Solid Waste Collection System and Operation of the incineration Plants  
  6. Perimeter Fence and Gates  
       
       
  Land Side Infrastructure Facilities  
       
  1. Total of about 60 buildings including Terminal building, Pier building, Cargo buildings, NSC and Control Tower, New Admin Building, etc  
  2. Internal Road systems, Car Parks and other Pavements  
  3. Landside Drainage Systems  
  4. Signs and Markings  
  5. Fences and Gates  
       

 

 

The above infrastructure facilities are inspected regularly by technical staff, identifying priorities with the situation and reliable and sustainable solutions are planned and implemented after discussing with their relevant higher officers. Services handled by AASL related to engineering disciplines in Electrical, Mechanical, Electronics etc. are conducted by relevant divisions and Civil Engineering inputs related to above works are also provided by us.

 

 

Priority will be accorded to infrastructure facilities related to aircraft movements, safety and security, passenger facilities while deciding the allotment of resources in respect of repairs and maintenance and among different up gradation and modernization schemes.

 

 

 

ACHIVEMENTS

 

 

The existing Runway at Bandaranaike International Airport has been used for continues aircraft operations for past 22 years on 24 hour basis and Civil Engineering (Maintenance) division has been caring out repairs and maintenance of above runway and rest of the aerodrome to meet ICAO standards to ensure uninterrupted operation of the runway and other related facilities.

 

 

As part of the up grading facilities, a new environmental friendly, state of art, Solid Waste Disposal Plant meeting Central Environmental Authority standards was installed and commissioned in year 2008. This plant has two identical machines and each machine has a capacity of 6 Tons/day. This is the First plant installed in Sri Lanka with a higher Technology in respect of solid waste incineration.
