Even though the world’s most powerful nations interfere, I will not change the decisions that benefit our people and the nation, said President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the inauguration.
The amount spent on the entire project will be 200 million US dollars. The Chinese government provides financial assistance. The area allocated for the airport is two thousand hectares. Construction will take place under two stages.
All basic facilities including runways, taxiways and parking facilities will be completed in the first phase to be completed by 2011.
All other airport and aviation related facilities will be completed in the second phase. These include servicing and repairing center for aircraft, hotels, pilot training center, maintenance hub, private jet parking and technical training centers.
Accordingly, the government targets to land the first flight at the Hambantota International Airport in 2011.
